Dear Sir or Madam,
Please advise what disciplinary action is taken if a Doctor
does not meet the requirements of the oath sworn and
the number of times and dates that such action is taken by the GMC
to ensure that Doctors conform to their oath (for the last ten
years).
Yours faithfully,
Edwin Morris

Dear Mr Morris
Thank you for your email. Your request has been considered in accordance
with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The GMC registers doctors to practise medicine in the UK. The GMC's core
guidance for doctors is Good Medical Practice; this sets the standards
against which a doctor's fitness to practise can be judged. Good Medical
Practice is available via our website at
http://www.gmc-uk.org/guidance/good_medi....
Therefore we do not hold information relating to disciplinary action as
a result of a breach of the Hippocratic Oath; rather we hold information
relating to our actions in respect of doctors whose fitness to practise
is questioned.
If we receive concerns regarding a doctor's fitness to practise, we will
consider whether to undertake an investigation into those concerns. If
an investigation is undertaken, various options are available with
regards to any resulting disciplinary action. For example, if a case
progresses to a Fitness to Practise Panel, resulting disciplinary action
may be to impose conditions on the doctor's registration, or suspend or
erase them from the register. Further information regarding our
investigation and adjudication process is available on our website at
http://www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/the_inves...
oncerns.asp (for the investigation process) and
http://www.gmc-uk.org/concerns/hearings_...
_adjudication.asp (for the adjudication process).
In relation to the frequency of action taken against doctors, we publish
annual statistics in relation to fitness to practise activity. These are
available via the Council papers section of our website. I have listed
below the links to the locations of the annual reports from 1999 to
2008.
