Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills

2 July 2009

Dear Ms Talmy,
Thank you for your email dated 27 June 2009 about the funding of Higher
Education.

Firstly, I would like to inform you that Freedom of Information
legislation is not relevant to your questions because all the relevant
information is already in the public domain.

To find the answers to your queries I would like to refer you to the
Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) website for a breakdown of how
Higher Education Institutions are funded. This link is [1]www.hesa.ac.uk.
You should look for the section covering Finance statistics found under
"View Statistics Online". Figures here cover the whole of the UK.

These figures should be read in conjunction with the Departmental reports
from the former Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS).
These can be found at
[2]www.dius.gov.uk/reports_and_publications/annual_report.aspx and provide
information on Government spending on student support. I should make clear
that the new Department for Business, Innovation and Skills only have
responsibility for Higher Education in England and this was also the case
with DIUS.
Yours sincerely,

Huw Moore
