Dear Mr John

Oxfordshire County Council promotes the Healthy Schools Programme to
schools throughout Oxfordshire through its Healthy Oxfordshire Schools
Team (HOST).
This Programme includes guidance and advice about school meals and healthy
eating as well as other wider health issues. Details about the Healthy
Schools Programme are available online through the website
[1]www.healthyschools.gov.uk.
The National Healthy Schools Programme has criteria that schools are
required to meet in relation to school meals and packed lunches:
* The school lunch service meets or exceeds the current Department for
Education and Skills standards for school lunches
* Healthy options are promoted
* There is appropriate guidance (promoting healthier options) given to
children/young people who have packed lunches and their parents/carers
* A policy is available covering all aspects of food and drink at
school, including appropriate curriculum links, reference to policy
regarding packed lunches/food brought into school and children/young
people going off-site to purchase food
* The policy is referred to in the school prospectus/profile
* The policy is regularly communicated to the entire school community
The role of the Healthy Oxfordshire Schools Team, supported by a Public
Health Dietician (Oxfordshire Primary Care Trust) is to enable schools to
achieve the Healthy School Award. In response to requests from schools a
folder of resources to help promote healthy packed lunches is available to
schools if requested. Guidance around developing a School Food policy is
also available if requested. However schools are encouraged to develop
their own policy in consultation with pupils, staff, parents and carers
under the leadership of the school's governing body.
