Dear Sir,
The population figures are not produced by the Office of the Chief
Economic Adviser, rather, we use the official estimates which are
produced by the General Register Office for Scotland and the Office of
National Statistics.
These data, including the specific breakdowns you requested are freely
available from the General Register Office for Scotland website:
www.gro-scotland.gov.uk and the Office for National Statistics website:
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/default.asp
In terms of Scottish Population, the GRO publication "Mid-2006
Population Estimates Scotland" : URL:
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/statistic...
on-estimates/mid-2006-population-estimates-scotland/index.html
is probably most useful to you.
You may also wish to be aware of Population Trends which is published
quarterly by the ONS.
http://www.statistics.gov.uk/statbase/pr...
If you consider table 1.2 of the Spring 2008 publication (no. 131) you
will see that the population of Scotland is estimated to be 5,117
thousand in 2006. Dividing this by the corresponding UK figure of 60,587
thousand leads to the 8.44% proportion which you cited from GERS
2006-2007.
Thank you for your interest in GERS.
Any further enquiries about population data should be addressed to the
General Register Office for Scotland or the Office for National
Statistics who are responsible for these estimates for Scotland and the
UK.
Sincerely
Richard Morrison
Statistician
