Former Jackson's Brickyards - rubbish in filled claypits

Sheila Oliver (Account suspended) made this Freedom of Information request to Manchester City Council

The request was successful.

From: Sheila Oliver (Account suspended)

18 July 2010

Dear Manchester City Council,

I believe you have some former Jackson's Brickards in your area,
which are all probably on your contaminated land register. Please
let me know how many there are/were and how many of these have
never been built on due to contamination/landfill gas problems.

Many thanks if you can oblige.

Kind regards

Sheila

Dear Ms Oliver

Re: - Request for Information Former Jackson***s Brickyards *** rubbish in
filled claypits, Reference Number: ENV/87JG6D

Thank you for your request for information, which was received by
Manchester City Council on 18 July 2010 and has been considered under the
provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

In response to your request, I have summarised the information as follows.
I have searched our files and have identified one site which matches your
search criteria. The Briscoe land landfill is one of a number of former
landfills across the City. There are no landfill sites on our
Contaminated Land Register although they have all been prioritised as part
of the Council's contaminated land strategy for further investigation in
the future.

BRISCOE LANE LANDFILL (Ref Site Catalogue # 08)

This site was formerly a clay extraction pit for Jackson***s Brickworks.
The site was licensed for the deposit of waste during the period
1978-1981, under waste management licence RD/LIC/013/76. However, it is
thought that some infilling occurred prior to 1978 and the precise nature
of the infill is not known. A limited Site Investigation was carried out
in 1995 and recorded the fill materials as typically consisting of ash,
clinker, brick debris, timber, plastic and some domestic putrescible
material. The depth of the fill has been recorded at a maximum depth of
14.8m. Elevated concentrations of methane and carbon dioxide have been
recorded at the site, and we have records which indicate that leachate and
odour nuisance have affected nearby properties in the past. These issues
may have been addressed by the former Greater Manchester Waste Regulation
Authority (now the Environment Agency) and further information may be held
by them. We have no recent site investigation data pertaining to this
site.

I trust that the above information is of assistance. I have attached a
document which provides background to landfilling in Manchester which may
be of use to you. However if you require any additional information that
may clarify Councils Strategy and Landfill sites in particular do not
hesitate to contact me directly.

Please note if you are not satisfied with this response you may ask for an
internal review. If you wish to complain you should contact me in the
first instance.

If you are not content with the outcome of the internal review, you have
the right to apply directly to the Information Commissioner for a
decision.

The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:

Please remember to quote the reference number above in any future
communications.
