Forced Marriage and Deregistration from School

Tania Berlow made this Freedom of Information request to Foreign and Commonwealth Office

The request was successful.

From: Tania Berlow

4 December 2009

Dear Foreign and Commonwealth Office,

I refer to the comments below in bold from David Davis.

I would like to know how many cases have been recorded of girls or
boys who have been forced into a marriage and removed from the
state school system by means of deregistration in order to home
educate?

Please if there are any cases , disaggregate the number per Local
Authority involved.

I was under the impression that people who wish to remove their
children from school for the purpose of forced marriage , either
disappear to a new address or they take the child overseas for a
period of time and then return (thus making it a Children Missing
Education issue and not anything to do with Elective Home
Education.

In addition the recent reviewq into Elective Home Education by
Graham Badman found no evidence of home education being used as a
cover for forced marriage.

Sincerely

Tania Berlow

<<David Davies is on Home Affairs Select Committee and therefore
hears about the "thousands of Kurdistani girls who go missing under
the guise of being HE".
Apparently Davies had spoken to Micheal Gove that day and ...>>>

Dear Foreign and Commonwealth Office,

Thank you so much for this information. I have been wanting access
to that report for months.
Basically upon reading , I see that there was no evidence that
parents were de-registering children in order to FM but that indeed
children 'disappear' from school for a short time or just before
they turn 16. Thbis is an issue for Education Wrelfare and the CME
teams.

The evidence sought by Badman showed that they did not find any
cases of FM in the home education community

Yours faithfully,

Tania Berlow
