Dear Mr Hollingshead

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION: Water Bodies

Thank you for your request for information that we received on 9 October about bodies of water owned, managed or maintained by the Forestry Commission.

You asked how many bodies of water are owned, managed or maintained by the Forestry Commission and associated bodies. We are only able to provide you with information relating to the Forestry Commission and cannot provide you with information on any other bodies.

Your request is being dealt with under the Environmental Information Regulations, rather than the Freedom of Information Act, because it relates to 'environmental information' as defined in Regulation 2.

The data you have requested is not held centrally but is a matter for our District offices. I have approached each of these offices to ascertain what data they hold, and in several offices the information is incomplete and is held in various formats. Under Regulation 8 of the Environmental Information Regulations, the Forestry Commission may charge for making the information available. We have assessed how much work would be involved to collect and collate the information you have requested and, using the standard rate of £25 per hour for staff time, estimate that the cost would be approximately £35,000. This figure may seem high but the Forestry Commission manages over a quarter of a million hectares of land.

Should you have any queries about how these charges have been set, or if you wish to change your request, then please let me know.

Please note that the supply of this information does not provide an automatic right to re-use the documents in a way that would infringe copyright or intellectual property rights, for example, by making multiple copies, publishing and issuing copies to the public. If you do wish to reuse information supplied please contact me.

Should you wish to complain about the way your request has been handled please contact:

However, should the matter fail to be resolved, you may make an appeal to the Information Commissioner's Office at:
