Dear Rob
Freedom of Information Enquiry
Thank you for your recent enquiry under the Freedom of Information Act.
Please find your response detailed below.
Your question:
Could I obtain the number of people who were diagnosed with febrile
neutropenia and the number of deaths due to febrile neutropenia for 2008?
Number of people who were diagnosed with febrile neutropenia in the
calendar year 2008 was 5 in total, 2 at Luton and Dunstable Hospital, 1at
Buckinghamshire Hospital, 1 at Cambridge Hospital and 1 at Milton Keynes
Hospital. Please note that this numbers are according to our records and
may not represent the real number of patients diagnosed with febrile
neutropenia if not reported to us. You can write to the individual
hospitals and ask them for the number of patients they diagnosed with
febrile neutropenia.
The number of deaths for 2008 due to febrile neutropenia is 0 according to
our records. This is according to what was recorded on the death
certificate. It is possible that patients who had febrile neutropenia had
other illnesses put as the cause of death such as septicaemia or
pneumonia, which can occur as a result of neutropenia. Please note these
patients are all Bedfordshire patients but seen in Hospitals we have
contracts with.
Death certificate data is available from the Office of National Statistics
(ONS Website: http://www.statistics.gov.uk/default.asp ).
I hope this response sufficiently answers your query however if you need
any further information then please do not hesitate to contact us again.
Please note that this response has been provided within the 20 working day
timeframe as stipulated in the Act.
NHS Bedfordshire does not allow information gained under the Act to be
reused in a raw or analysed state.
Yours sincerely
