Dear Rob

INFORMATION REQUESTED UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2000

Data Requested:

Number of people diagnosed with febrile neutropenia

Deaths due to febrile neutropenia in 2008

As above for those receiving chemotherapy

Thank you for you request for the information as summarised above.

This is an area of care that NHS HMR is committed to commissioning
effective and safe services in compliance with national guidance and the
findings of the recent National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcomes
and Death (NCEPOD) (For Better or Worse? Review of the care of patients
who have died within 30 days of receiving systemic anticancer therapy).

These data are not readily available and I have requested that a detailed
piece of work is undertaken to try to find out this information.

With respect to the time period over which the data have been requested,
the full year mortality data for the PCT has not yet been received
although we expect that this will be received in the near future.

We have contacted the team that collated the national review to assist us
in the identification of this information from routine information
sources.

Collation of data on diagnoses of febrile neutropenia is problematic
because:

1. The diagnostic code on admission to hospital may relate to sepsis and
or other complication of neutropenia rather than febrile neutropenia.
2. Patients from the Borough of Rochdale will be admitted to different
health care providers across the conurbation of Greater Manchester
dependent on the clinical pathway for each cancer type.

I hope that we will be able to work through these issues and find the
information as requested. I will contact you in the next four weeks to
further report on progress.

Many thanks

Yours sincerely
