Dear Sir/Madam

FREEDOM of INFORMATION ACT 2000

I write in connection with your request for information dated 23/12/08,
which asked our organisation for the following:

. The number of patients who have received Eye Movement
Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR) treatment in England in the last ten
years.

. What research is being done by NICE to obtain empirical evidence
to ascertain it's efficacy (in those ten years)?

Your request for information has now been considered and accepted with the
following response being issued in compliance with the act.

I can confirm that the information you have requested is not held by NICE.

NICE examines data on the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of
treatments, and does not collect routine data on the frequency of use of
interventions in the NHS.

The NHS Information Centre may be able to provide you with the figures you
have requested. Their website is: [1]http://www.ic.nhs.uk and they can be
contacted on tel: 0845 300 6016 or by email: [2][email address].

NICE does not undertake primary research to collect empirical evidence of
the effectiveness or cost effectiveness of interventions.

EMDR is referred to in the NICE guidance on `Post-traumatic stress
disorder' (CG26), issued March 2005.

You can access this clinical guideline from the following link:
[3]http://www.nice.org.uk/CG26.

CG26 included a research recommendation on EMDR, but NICE relies on
research funders to take these forward.

You may wish to look at the following external website:
[4]http://www.controlled-trials.com for details of ongoing trials in this
field.

The response time for your request on this occasion was 10 working days.

I hope this correspondence has answered all the issues raised in your
original request. If you would like to discuss your enquiry further please
contact the Enquiry Handling Team on 0845 003 7781 or via
[5][NICE request email].

If you are unhappy with this response and wish to make a formal complaint
it must be made in writing by letter, fax or email within 20 working days
of the Institute's response to you and sent to:

Alana Christopher

Associate Director, Corporate Office

within two working days. The Associate Director, Corporate Office, will
review your complaint and a full reply will be sent to you within 20
working days.

If you are not content with the outcome your complaint, you may apply

Thank you for your reply:

So would it be fair to say that NICE are recommending this treatment,

although NICE can offer No empirical evidence to its efficacy - failure rates?.

and have no figures of how many clients have received the treatment in England?

and NICE do not undertake the research themselves?

thank you, its been enlightening.
