Equality Advice for Tourists
Max Power made this Freedom of Information request to Northern Ireland Tourist Board
Northern Ireland Tourist Board did not have the information requested.
From: Max Power
24 April 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
Could you please provide me with any documents the Board has
relating to advice given to tourists or visitors when faced with
the all too frequent discrimination (either racial, gender,
religious, sexual orientation or other) from local businesses in
the provision of services (E.g. Refusing to provide a room in a Bed
& Breakfast to a lesbian couple, or refusing to serve an Eastern
European in a shop).
Could you also provide documents of any strategy the Board has to
reduce discrimination and promote equality by local businesses?
Please note that replies which involve attachments in proprietary
file formats (such as PDFs, Word Documents and others) are not
acceptable. A reply which is not in plain text format will be
deemed to be a refusal to answer.
Yours faithfully,
Max Power

Dear Max Power,
Freedom of Information Act 2000
Thank you for your request for information received on Monday 27^th April
2009 regarding equality advice given to tourists or visitors when faced
with discrimination. The Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) is governed
by the requirements of the Tourism (Northern Ireland) Order 1992 and does
not have a remit to produce documents on these subjects.
The legislation is structured in such a way that the provision of expert
advice is taken forward by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland
(ECNI) and the requirement not to discriminate is the responsibility of
each individual tourism establishment and local businesses in the
provision of services. Consequently individuals with serious complaints of
breaches of the anti-discrimination laws are best served by contacting the
Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. Contact details as follows:
Equality House
7 – 9 Shaftesbury Square
Belfast
BT2 7DP
Telephone: 028 90 500 600
Text-phone: 028 90 500 589
Enquiry Line: 028 90 890 890
Fax: 028 90 248 687
Email: [3][email address]
Or by visiting their website at

Having said this NITB does try to disseminate best practice in association
with ECNI, and we will also try to help any tourist who finds themselves
in difficulty. Our Visitor Information Unit, often in association with the
relevant District Council Tourist Information Centre will respond to
enquiries and complaints.
At a strategic level NITB works with groups such as Disability Action, the
Coalition on Sexual Orientation (CoSO) and the Northern Ireland Council
for Ethnic Minorities (NICEM) and facilitates distribution of appropriate
training and publicity material through our corporate website
[5]www.nitb.com. NITB is a social partner with ECNI and participates in
Anti-racism programmes, and disseminates material to our industry through
our contact databases.
NITB wants every visitor to Northern Ireland to be treated with equality
and respect and to enjoy their visit. Where the visitor has had a bad
experience it is important to make the issues known to the appropriate
body, and if we can assist you any further please let us know by
contacting NITB’s Equality Manager Patricia Ricketts on Tel: 028 9044
1513 or by e-mailing [6][email address].
If you feel that the information we have provided does not fully meet your
request please contact me on the telephone number above in the first
instance. You have the right to request a formal review by NITB and if you
wish to do so, please write to:
