Employment Conditions of Librarians

David Bailey made this Freedom of Information request to Falkirk Council

The request was successful.

From: David Bailey

Dear Falkirk Council,

I would like to make a Freedom of Information request regarding
Librarians working for Falkirk Council:

How many full-time Librarians are employed in your Community
Services Department?

How many of these posts are on pay grade H?
How many of these posts are on pay grade I?
Which grade pays less?

How many of these full-time posts have 35 hour contracts?
How many of these full-time posts have 37 hour contracts?

How many of these posts have a 37 hour contract and are paid at the
lower grade?

Why are there two different pay scales for Librarians?
Why do some work 35 hours a week and others work 37?

Yours faithfully,

David Bailey

Dear Mr Bailey,

Response to FOI enquiry about librarian pay in Community Services

How many full-time Librarians are employed in your Community
Services Department? How many of these posts are on pay grade H?
How many of these posts are on pay grade I?

Principal Librarians: 3 Grade K Senior Librarians: 7 Grade J
Librarians: 15 Grade I (No librarians on Grade H)

Which grade pays less?

Grade I is the lowest grade. H is a lower grade than I. (No
librarians on Grade H)

How many of these full-time posts have 35 hour contracts? How many
of these full-time posts have 37 hour contracts?

35 hour contracts: All Principal Librarians; All senior librarians;
9 librarians 37 hour contracts: 6 librarians (All have changed post
or joined the service since Single Status was implemented in 2006.)

How many of these posts have a 37 hour contract and are paid at
the lower grade?

6 librarians are on 37 hour contracts and are paid on Grade I

Why are there two different pay scales for Librarians?

There are three different pay scales for librarians, depending on
level of responsibility.

Why do some work 35 hours a week and others work 37?

Single status implementation led to all fulltime posts in Falkirk
Council being changed to 37 hours per week. However, staff with
existing 35-hour week contracts did not have their working hours
changed, unless going to a new post.

I hope this answers your enquiry. Please find attached Falkirk
Council's FOI "Your right to complain" leaflet
