Employment Age Discrimination

A Freedom of Information request to Cambridgeshire Constabulary by William Hopkins

The request was successful.

William Hopkins

22 May 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am making a request for information under the terms of the
Freedom of Information Act.

It concerns age discrimination.

Could you please tell me if Cambridgeshire Constabulary has a
policy statement regarding employment of civilian personnel that
addresses the issue of the age of applicants? If you have such a
policy document, then I would like a copy of it. It can be provided
in any standard digital format.

I would also like to know if you have an upper age limit beyond
which you will not consider employing any person.

I would also like to know if you have a normal retirement age for
civilian employees.

I would also like to know if the person making the decision on who
to shortlist for interview or who to hire is able to see
information revealing the age or date of birth of the applicant.

I would also like to know how many civilian employees you have who
are aged over 65.

Yours faithfully,

William Hopkins

Dear William

FREEDOM OF INFORMATION REQUEST REFERENCE NO: 0292/2009

In reply to your request for information under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000, dated 22/05/2009.

Your request was received as (we have added the question numbers for ease
of reference):
I am making a request for information under the terms of the Freedom of
Information Act.
It concerns age discrimination.

1. Could you please tell me if Cambridgeshire Constabulary has a policy
statement regarding employment of civilian personnel that addresses the
issue of the age of applicants? If you have such a policy document, then I
would like a copy of it. It can be provided in any standard digital format.

2. I would also like to know if you have an upper age limit beyond which
you will not consider employing any person.

3. I would also like to know if you have a normal retirement age for
civilian employees.

4. I would also like to know if the person making the decision on who to
shortlist for interview or who to hire is able to see
information revealing the age or date of birth of the applicant.

5. I would also like to know how many civilian employees you have who are
aged over 65.

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (The Act) requires us to handle all

civilian personnel. Such personnel are known as police staff and our
responses to your questions are given below:

1. This question asked for a copy of a policy statement that addresses the
age of applicants for police staff positions. We hold no information to
answer this question as we do not hold such a policy document.

2. This question asked if we have an upper age limit beyond which we will
not consider employing someone. Again we hold no information to answer this
question. Outside of the FOI Act you may wish to know that a decision
depends on the status of the position and any training requirements.

3. This question asked what the normal retirement age is for police staff.
The normal retirement age for police staff is 65 years.

4. This question asked if the person making the shortlist for interview was
given details of the age or date of birth of an applicant. This person does
not know that information.

5. Your final question asked how many police staff employees are over the
age of 65 years. We currently have 9 employees over the age of 65 years.

If you are unhappy with this response, please see the attachment below,
which sets out your rights to appeal.

(See attached file: Complaint Rights.pdf)
