Dear P Foomer
RE: FOI266128 - e-Government Data Sharing
Thank you for your e-mail of 4 June 2009 requesting the following
information under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (the Act):
Please provide dataset definitions utilised in inter-government
departmental communications which uniquely identify a person or
organisation.
The Freedom of Information Act provides the applicant with an access right
to recorded information held by public authorities (in this case the
Cabinet Office).
The government standards for describing people and organisations are
available in the Government Data Standards Catalogue, which can be found
online at: [1]http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/gdsc/html/defa... This
includes standards for person identifiers and organisation numbers.
However, if your request relates to more specific information regarding
how each implementation uniquely identifies a person or an organisation
(which would be dependant on the rules and processes as set by the
departments involved), then the Cabinet Office does not hold this
information (i.e. a centralised list of all the interactions/databases
used across government or a single set of collected dataset definitions).
If you have any queries about this e-mail, please contact me. Please
remember to quote the reference number above in any future communications.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request or wish to request an internal review, you should write to:
Sue Gray
Director
Cabinet Office
70 Whitehall
London

e-mail: [Cabinet Office request email]
You should note that the Cabinet Office will not normally accept an
application for internal review if it is received more than two months
after the date that the reply was issued.
If you are not content with the outcome of your internal review, you may
apply direct to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally the
Commissioner cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted the
complaints procedure provided by Cabinet Office.
The Information Commissioner can be contacted at:
