Dear Sir or Madam,

Who adresses problems where can't get appropriate teeth care
because of costs because if I have anaesthetic, have to pay for
everything else ??!!

I am a pensioner never paid a proper wage to afford these mercenary
costs .

When I have diagnosed CFS ' fibromyalgia [ trigger point muscles-
gums] acute pain, low thyroid, spina bifida occulta - chronic utis
& bowel problems , why am I neglected by NHS with acute pain when
muscles examined so have to be anaethetised . This has now made my
sister ill who has to travel 2 hrs each way to escort me to cover
those administering ??!!!

Why if I am willing to pay for anaesthetic am I pay for everything
else -what can't afford .Why is NHS ripping me off by not providing
access and damaging for ever my teeth ??!

Yours faithfully,

Julie Shrive

Dear Ms. Shrive,

Thank you for your email dated 11/06/09 re FOI request.

All dentists and dental professionals must be registered with the GDC
before they can work in the United Kingdom - whether they work in the NHS,
in private practice, or any other form of practice. We work with the
public and the profession to protect patients and promote confidence in
dental professionals.

We register qualified dental professionals, set high standards of dental
practice and behaviour, quality-assure dental education, make sure that
dental professionals keep up to date, continually work to strengthen and
improve patient protection and take action if a dental professional is no
longer safe to practise.

Unfortunately, the NHS only covers a finite amount of dental treatments.
NHS treatment is meant to meet all your clinical needs - that means the
treatment which is necessary to secure and maintain your oral health. You
may want or your dentist may suggest private treatment which goes beyond
what the NHS covers.

The cost of NHS dental treatment is set by the Government and you will
pay the same whichever dental practice you choose to go to. Unfortunately,
if it's private treatment there is no regulation over costs. The Dentist
can charge whatever he/she sees fit for the relevant treatment.

As the remit sets out above the GDC is the regulatory body for dental
professionals and we have no involvement over the NHS or its rules and
charges nor do we give clinical advice. I have attached their booklet but
for a fuller response to any NHS queries you would need to contact the NHS
[1]www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk. Alternatively, you can call them on 0845 46 47.

I hope this is helpful.

Yours sincerely

Dear Lola Fajemirokun (020 7887 3809),

If I am medically compromised by conditions & dentists agree need
sedation for most work & had a cardiac whilst in Wimpole St because
could get no help last time elsewhere. You are causing my health &
safety risk buy not assisting me . The information is a joke when
system corrupt and is disregarded by those providing . What is your
policy re: this as Complaints do not record properly then
maladministrate , discriminate and blame using data protection
inappropriately .

Yours sincerely,

Julie Shrive

Dear Ms. Shrive,

The FOI dpt. at the GDC relates to FOI issues regarding the GDC only.

However, the whole basis of your complaint and query is to do with the
NHS therefore to continue with your complaint you will need to contact
the NHS as previously advised. The Patient Advice & Liason Service
(PALS) at your local Primary Care Trust would be the first point of
contact and they would also be able to tell you who can help you with
FOI queries regarding the NHS.

The GDC can ONLY consider cases where it is suggested that a dentist may
have committed serious professional misconduct or a dentist's fitness to
practice dentistry may be seriously impaired i.e. by ill health. If you
think that a dentist has behaved in a way which calls into question
whether s/he should be allowed to continue to practice then that would
be covered by the GDC and you can put such complaints to us. In order to
process a complaint against a dentist or dental professional, please see
the GDC's website:

Dear Lola Fajemirokun (020 7887 3809),

You don't seem to understand that this is to do with cost of dental
treatment & that you don't understand how to address a policy issue
or have ability to resolve . So need someone not on a remit or
contract to address fairly and see I have access to urgent proper
treatment at afair price with sedation.

Yours sincerely,

Julie Shrive

If you're prepared to queue or meet their referral requirements, you can be seen for free at a dental hospital by dental students under supervision.
