From: Mr. Figg
17 September 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request the following information under the Freedom
Of Information Act:
1. The combined cost, per annum, of employing the Islands five dog
wardens, including in this total the head dog warden if he is not
included in the five wardens the council have previously stated
that they employ.
2. The costs, for the last twelve months, paid to the contractor
who currently empties the dog bins and dispose of the waste.
3. The cost, per unit, of the dog waste bins the council uses.
4. The total number of dog bins currently situated on the island.
5. The average life expectancy, prior to the need for replacement,
of the dog bins used by the council. Taking into account general
wear and tear, gradual deterioration due to ultra violet exposure
and exposure to the elements, vandalism, arson attacks etc.
In addition I would like to be informed of the number of stray dogs
caught by the Island dog wardens, during the last twelve months.
And the number of these that were impounded for over 24 hours.
Yours faithfully,
Mr. Figg

Dear Mr Figg
Please see below response to your request for information via email.
CRM reference number iw09/9/31641.
For ease if understanding, I have answered each of your questions as laid
out in your request below;
1. The combined cost, per annum, of employing the Islands five dog
wardens, including in this total the head dog warden if he is not included
in the five wardens the council have previously stated that they employ.
£93,585
2. The costs, for the last twelve months, paid to the contractor who
currently empties the dog bins and dispose of the waste.
The dog bins are emptied as part of the street cleaning contract which
also includes routine cleaning and litter picking of streets, emptying of
dog bins and litter bins and removal of flytipping and the overall value
of the street cleaning contract is around £1.4 million per annum. Further
breakdown is not available.
3. The cost, per unit, of the dog waste bins the council uses.
Retriever 35 * Red or Dark Green c/w wall mounting kit £183.09
Retriever 60 * Red or Dark Green c/w post and Ground Lock System £285.66
Fido 25 * Red or Dark Green c/w polyethylene liner, for wall or post
mounting £84.24
4. The total number of dog bins currently situated on the island.
There are currently approximately 440 dog bins in use by the Isle Of Wight
Council.
5. The average life expectancy, prior to the need for replacement, of the
dog bins used by the council. Taking into account general wear and tear,
gradual deterioration due to ultra violet exposure and exposure to the
elements, vandalism, arson attacks etc.
Glasdons* supply new bins with a three year warranty on all parts and
colours. They can provide testaments of people who have had the same bin
for twenty years.
They are manufactured to ISO standards as follows; ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.
In addition I would like to be informed of the number of stray dogs caught
by the Island dog wardens, during the last twelve months.
And the number of these that were impounded for over 24 hours.
From the 17^th of September 2008 to 17^th September 2009 the Dog Wardens
collected 220 stray dogs. Of these, 23 were kennelled for more than 24
hours.
