Dear Mr Chapman,
Thank you for your e-mail of 27 March requesting details of the number of
people in the Department and employees with science and engineering
degrees.
As at 31 March 2009, there were 891 employees.
The Department's systems do not hold information on qualifications and
therefore we can not provide the information in the form requested. Our
HR systems do allow our employees to record some qualifications. From the
latest information available, seven employees had engineering degrees and
81 employees had science degrees. However, you should also note that:
(i) this is information that staff have made available voluntarily and
therefore does not constitute a comprehensive return.
(ii) given the lack of a clear definition of a science degree, there are
likely to be some inconsistencies in the data provided.
If you have any queries about this letter, please contact me. Please
remember to quote our reference number in any future communications.
If you are unhappy with the service you have received in relation to your
request and wish to make a complaint or request a review of our decision,
you should write to me within two calendar months of the date of this
letter.
If you are not content with the outcome of your complaint, you may apply
directly to the Information Commissioner for a decision. Generally, the
ICO cannot make a decision unless you have exhausted our complaints/review
procedure.
Yours sincerely,
Colman Ambrose
