DISABLED PROVISION

Julie Shrive (Account suspended) made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Culture, Media and Sport

The request was refused by Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

From: Julie Shrive (Account suspended)

3 June 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Do they monitor and publish the reviews of disabled access
provision such as the Royal Academy has only 2 spaces which are
taken for the private view tomorrow - Buyer's Day . So can't go
unless take disabled scooter amongst the crowd .
Two years ago received a traffic ticket speeding to Design Centre
as couldn't go to normal view for same reason & was on way on a
route never been before at a very low speed very early sunday
morning.
I am now finding most organisations have no disability officers
such as the British Library to address such issues. Why is this? Is
discrimination acceptable now?

Yours faithfully,

Julie Shrive

Most Call Centre structures do not address disabled access either physically or complaint wise not addressing discretion or problems employing those who misinterpret & cannot record truth .Then blame. As a result coulldn't go RA I hope they had a good time with their mercenary charges. Now having trouble with DVLA & car tax won't administer. What is going on?

Dear LEWRY SHARON,

You are acting illegally - as all public authorities should have a
Duty of Care 'This is outrageous money was taken off me for full
fees for BA /MA I need a refund as can't do due your, and every
other organisation's discriminatory policy of not addressing care
and access needs .
As this is civil liberties/ human rights abuse demand an Internal
Review as you have no discretion .Just mercenary bias especially
with funding. While all Ministers& MPs are doing is spending our
money with NO COMMUNICATION ??!!

Yours sincerely,

Julie Shrive

" I have forwarded your letter to the head of the culture correspondence desk of the Public Engagement and Recognition Unit. A member of his team will be responding to your enquiry."

Will this resolve or are you playing BIG BROTHER abusing your power.Sending it back to a Call Centre who have so little qualification cannot record correctly what is said to them and blame rather than resolve as have no discretion??!!!

Dear Ms Shrive,

Thank you for your query to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport
(DCMS) of 3 June 2009 about disabled provision to which I have been asked
to reply.

DCMS sponsored museums are not required to publish their disability
policies or report them to us. They are bound by the Disability
Discrimination Act 2005, which requires them to make their buildings
accessible. In practice, many museums are Grade 1 listed buildings which
means that they find this difficult. The museums do have their own
policies on access which you may find on their websites, but they are not
required to report to the DCMS.
Disability issues in the British Library are addressed by the Disability
Action Group which works to achieve genuine equality for disabled people
using the Library’s services. This group is chaired by one of the
Library’s Directors, Phil Spence, and takes a keen interest in issues
raised by visitors and readers. One member of the group has special
responsibility for disability issues across the Reading Rooms, but all
staff at the British Library who serve members of the public will be happy
to assist anyone with a disability in any way they can.

Dear MARPLES DEMPSTER,

You maybe feeling happy with your reply but the needs & access
arrangements have been deliberately ignored and neglected by those
who are able operating like call centres .
Is it fair I have not been able to visit RA Summer Exhibition
because you allow yourselves to neglect have NO DUTY OF CARE in a
public space . Disgraceful. Abuse of power .I don't think the
average tax payer would like to hear how you are ignoring your
duties. So request internal review as that is not what I found when
tried to raise issues at British Library and the lorry outside
British Film theatre . Totally unreasonable.

Yours sincerely,

Julie Shrive

Dear Ms Shrive,

Your email of 3 June asked 'do they monitor and publish the reviews of
disabled access provision' and mentioned the lack of disability officers
and access.

Freedom of information (FOI) requests to the Department for Culture, Media
and Sport (DCMS) are formal requests for copies of information held on
record at the Department. However, general questions are dealt with as
non-FOI correspondence. Your request of 3 June, asks for explanation,
rather than specifically to see anything held on record at DCMS. As a
result your request and my email response were both outside the scope of
the Freedom of Information Act. I respond below to your e-mail of 29 June
through our usual complaints procedure rather than dealing with it under
the terms of the Freedom of Information Act.

I refer you to the answer previously given, that while DCMS sponsored
museums and the British Library are bound by the Disability Discrimination
Act 2005, DCMS sponsored organisations are not required under the Act to
publish their disability policies or report them to us.
