Home Office

Dear Ms Gray,
Thank you for your request dated 20 May where you have requested the
numbers of children detained in immigration detention centres in the UK as
on 1.5.2008. This falls to be dealt with under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000.
Statistical Information on the numbers in detention are routinely published
on the Research Development Statistical (RDS) website. However, local
records show that there were 39 children detained in the immigration removal
estate on 1 May 2008. This includes children who entered or left detention
on 1 May.* All of the children were detained with their families.
The figures represent children of families who have sought asylum. The
United Kingdom Border Agency, does not detain unaccompanied asylum-seeking
children, unaccompanied children will be referred to local Social Services.
* These figures are management information and are not routinely published
and are therefore subject to change.
If you are dissatisfied with this response, you may request an independent
internal review of our handling of your request by submitting your complaint
to:
Border and Immigration Agency Information Access Policy Team
6th Floor, West Wing
Block 'C'
Whitgift Centre
Wellesley Road

During the independent review the department's handling of your information
request will be reassessed by staff who were not involved in providing you
with this response. Should you remain dissatisfied after this internal
review, you will have a right of complaint to the Information Commissioner
as established by section 50 of the Freedom of Information Act.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Feakins,
