From: John Bowring

19 January 2010

Dear Humberside Police,

On 16th December, 2009 I was issued with a fixed penatly notice
E0154602 3 1`6 for speeding by WPC ACOMB Collar Number 1908.
Could you please provide me with details of the fixed penalty
notices issued by this officer for speeding on 15th, 16th and 17th
December 2009. I am only interested in the ticket number, time,
day, date, place and in particular the SPEED of the vehicles. No
names and address required nor vehicle reg numbers.

If it's not too much trouble could you provide me with the full
instructions to officers on how to use Prolaser 111 laser guns. I
am familiar with the manual for the laser but I would like to know
the instructions the officer is given on their use.

Yours faithfully,

John Bowring

The file attached is a winmail.dat file; details of the problem and a workaround, which the police force could follow, is available at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/278061

As I understand it it is a file which only those using Microsoft applications to open email attachments can read.

Mr Bowring

Unfortunately the format is the same format used for every other email attachment that we send. I will try and send again but if you cannot open it, I will have to print them off and send them via the Royal Mail to your home address. You're not using a MAC by any chance are you? We have heard of software issues opening attachments as Windows and the MAC software do not seem compatible.

Dear Waller, Paul 8065,
Thank you for replying. No I am not using MAC. I have been told
that you are using Winmail.dat attachments and when I look up about
them on the net, their have been tremendous problems, when trying
to open the files. Keep trying for me Paul.

Yours sincerely,

John Bowring

Mr Bowring

Sorry for the delay. I have checked with our IT guys who have confirmed
that the email system we use is the only way to convey email attachments.
Windows 2003 as a minimum should be used as your operating system to open
them. I will send it again, but if it fails this time, I will put copies
of the tickets in the mail to you.

I've also removed the incoming message dated 11th February since, while I couldn't make any sense of the TNEF attachment either, it probably contained the same scanned data.
