Dear Stockport Borough Council,
I was disturbed to see that the decision was made at the Council's
Executive Meeting on 18/01/10 to close four nurseries in deprived
areas with no discussion or debate on the subject whatsoever in an
Executive Meeting which lasted only from 18.00 to 18.10. Please may
I see any documents relating to this subject from the pre-Executive

Dear Mrs Oliver,
I am writing in response to your request for information below (ref 2617).
To clarify, the Executive considered reports in relation to only three
areas arising from the nursery review and no decisions to implement the
proposed changes have been taken at this point. The decisions taken by the
Executive were to approve the publication of statutory proposals. In
addition, please note that the proposals do not involve removal of
provision. The two nursery schools proposed for closure are proposed to be
replaced by provision at the primary schools located on the same sites.
With regard to the nursery class removal, there is sufficient provision at
the nursery school located on the same site to provide alternative places.
The publication of statutory proposals follows a two-month period of
public consultation, the feedback from which was presented to the
Executive alongside explanatory reports for consideration at its 18th
January meeting. There were no additional documents presented to a
pre-Executive meeting.
If you are unhappy with the way we have handled your request you are
entitled to ask for an internal review. Any internal review will be
carried out by a senior member of staff who was not involved with your
original request. To ask for an internal review, contact

Dear FOI Officer,
Thank you for your reply. I note both councillors from other
parties and the press expected some discussion on the subject, so
it wasn't only me who was astonished at what went on.
Thank you very much for your prompt and comprehensive reply. I
think using the What Do They Know website might bring about
substantial improvments in how FOIA and EOI 2004 issues are dealt
with in Stockport.
Yours sincerely,
Sheila Oliver
