Dear Northumbria Police,
I would like to know the following:

1) How many deaths in custody have occurred in the last 5 years?

2) Which station was responsible for each person who died? (Eg.
Bromley: X deaths. Brixton: Y deaths. Etc.)

3) How many members of the public are served by the police stations
where deaths occurred?

Provision of information held by Northumbria Police made under the Freedom
of Information Act 2000 (the 'Act')

Thank you for your email dated 22 February 2010 in which you made a request
for access to certain information which may be held by Northumbria Police.

As you may be aware the purpose of the Act is to allow a general right of
access to information held by a Public Authority (including the Police),
subject to certain limitations and exemptions.

You asked:

1. How many deaths in custody have occurred in the last 5 years?

2. Which station was responsible for each person who died? (Eg. Bromley: X
deaths. Brixton: Y deaths. Etc.)

3. How many members of the public are served by the police stations where
deaths occurred?

In response:

We have now had the opportunity to fully consider your request and I
provide a response for your attention.

1. During the period 1 April 2004 - 31 December 2009 there have been 3
deaths in custody (ie, in the custody suite or under arrest).

You may also find of interest information available via the Independent
Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) website, which contains information
in relation to deaths in custody and deaths following police custody.
In order to aid and assist you further I have supplied the relevant link

2. Deaths occurred at the following stations, however it should be noted
that neither the station nor the persons in it were necessarily
'responsible' for each death:-

Newcastle x 1
Gateshead x 1
South Shields x 1

3. No information held. However, information is available, by Area
Command, from the Northumbria Police website. In order to aid and
