Database of Post Box Locations
A Freedom of Information request to Royal Mail Group by Richard Jackson
Royal Mail Group did not have the information requested.

1 September 2008
Dear Sir or Madam,
In response to a previous FOI enquiry (detailed at
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/er...),
it was revealed that the Royal Mail's database of postbox locations
has an overly restrictive postcode field that, rather incredibly,
is unable to actually hold a full length UK postcode!
Can you please supply details of when, and by whom, this database
was designed and implemented, any specification documents that
exist in relation to it, and details of all costs incurred in its
creation. If you hold any information relating to why this glaring
problem has never been rectified, I would ask that that also be
released.
Yours faithfully,
Richard

Dear Mr Jackson
I am writing in response to your request dated 01 September 2008 regarding
the list of Postboxes provided in response to a previous Freedom of
Information Request. You asked for details of when the database holding
this information was designed and implemented. You also requested any
specifications documents relating to the database and details of the costs
incurred in its creation.
We do not hold any records relating to the design and implementation of
this database. This is simply an access database maintained by the
Collection Plate Administrator for the purposes of their role. This list
of postboxes information meets their requirements and the postcode field
doesn't adversely affect any operations.
I'm sorry that the information you requested is not held on this occasion
but if you have any queries or further information needs in the future then
please do contact me. If you are dissatisfied with this response you do
have a right to request an internal review, in which case please write to
the Head of Information Compliance, Royal Mail House, Company Secretary's
Office, 5th Floor, 148 Old Street, LONDON, EC1V 9HQ. An internal panel
will then review the decision, and you will be advised of the outcome.
If, having requested an internal review by Royal Mail, you are still not
satisfied with our response you also have a right of appeal to the
Information Commissioner at:
Information Commissioner's Office
Wycliffe House
Water Lane
Wilmslow
Cheshire
SK9 5AF
Telephone: 01625 545 700
