Data on inspections of care homes and psychiatric hospitals since

The request was successful.

Dear Care Quality Commission,

I am looking for information on inspection frequency for different types of services going back to the formation of the National Care Services Commission under the Care Standards Act 2000. If it is possible, please could you provide me with figures for each financial year, going back to the formation of the NCSC, until April 2011.

1. The number of a) care homes and b) domiciliary care providers registered with either NCSC/CSCI/CQC for each financial year;

2. The number of inspections of a) care homes and b) domiciliary care providers registered with either NCSC/CSCI/CQC for each financial year;

3. The number of psychiatric wards inspected by the MHAC/CQC for each financial year since 2001.

4. If it is possible to isolate expenditure by the relevant bodies on inspection of services (and I appreciate this may not be possible), please could you give details of the annual expenditure on inspection of a) care homes; b) domiciliary care providers and c) psychiatric wards for NCSC/CSCI/CQC/MHAC, since 2001 - or as far back as possible.

Thank you very much for your assistance in this matter.

Yours faithfully,

Lucy Series

Information Access, Care Quality Commission

Dear Lucy,

Thank you for your recent information request.

I am in the process of sourcing the information for your request.

One of the teams who will be providing the data has asked whether in
relation to the Health and Social Care Act (HSCA) you require data about
provider or locations? They have advised that if the intention is to
compare the Care Standards Act and HSCA data then location information may
be of more use to you.

Please let me know if this will be suitable for your purposes.

Kind regards

Dear Ms Series

Thank you for your e-mail dated 3rd May containing an information access
request in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA),
which the Commission received on the same day.

The Information Access Team has now processed your request will address
each of your questions in turn:

"I am looking for information on inspection frequency for different types
of services going back to the formation of the National Care Services
Commission under the Care Standards Act 2000. If it is possible, please
could you provide me with figures for each financial year, going back to
the formation of the NCSC, until April 2011.

1. The number of a) care homes and b) domiciliary care providers
registered with either NCSC/CSCI/CQC for each financial year;

Please see attached spreadsheet (we hold data going back to 2003).

Please note that we currently do not have access to the dataset as at
31/03/11 so we cannot provide data relating to how many active locations
offering care home/DCA services were attached to registered providers at
that date. We have instead provided the current figure. As mentioned in
my previous email, direct comparison with the CSA data may be problematic
given that locations can now be classed as more than one service type.

2. The number of inspections of a) care homes and b) domiciliary care
providers registered with either NCSC/CSCI/CQC for each financial year;

Please see attached spreadsheet.

3. The number of psychiatric wards inspected by the MHAC/CQC for each
financial year since 2001.

Count

Please note the first row is a count of all wards visited as part of our
regular visiting function; the second row shows a distinct count of wards
visited within the financial year (wards may have been visited more than
once).

The low count for 2002/03 represents a partial data set for that period.

4. If it is possible to isolate expenditure by the relevant bodies on
inspection of services (and I appreciate this may not be possible), please
could you give details of the annual expenditure on inspection of a) care
homes; b) domiciliary care providers and c) psychiatric wards for
NCSC/CSCI/CQC/MHAC, since 2001 - or as far back as possible."

We are unable to provide data that isolates individual service types and
we do not hold data prior to 2005/2006. It is also worth noting that
there were no MHAC `inspections' as such, but there were visits by
Commissioners to mental health services to meet with detained patients in
private and monitor the use of the MHA. MHAC (and CQC) do not use MHA
Commissioners to inspect as such so we have not provided data in relation
to this aspect of your request.

Our finance team have been able to provide a spreadsheet of inspection
costs for your information (see attached document). The analysis shows a)
percentage of the work that relates to inspections, b) the total
expenditure of CSCI/CQC and then (a x b) to give us the total cost of
inspections.

I hope that you find this information helpful. If you are not satisfied
with this response you may request an internal review of the Commission's
decision. Please contact:

Dear Ms Blakely,

Thank you very much for supplying this detailed information, please pass on my thanks to the relevant teams as well for collating the data. Could I just trouble you to confirm the figures in the spreadsheet on Cost of Inspections. They report the overall expenditure as being in the range of £141,153 - £132,525; it doesn't specify that this is in thousands, but I assume it is? Making the total expenditure range from £141.2m to £132.5m?

Yours sincerely,

Lucy Series
