Currency questions inc Promissory Notes

Bob Willis made this Freedom of Information request to Her Majesty’s Treasury

The request was partially successful.

From: Bob Willis

5 March 2010

Dear Her Majesty's Treasury,

Can you answer the following questions for me please.:-

Are UK bank notes promissory notes?

What do the 'pounds' refer to in the statement included on all UK
notes i.e 'I promise to pay the bearer..'etc
Is it pounds of silver? Pounds of Gold or something else not
stated?

Can I issue my own promissory notes in order to settle a debt?

When did a UK Government last issue it's own currency?

Yours faithfully,

Bob Willis
