Dear Strathclyde Police,
Regarding the recent reports in the press about Buckfast Tonic Wine
and crime association, I would like to enquire about some specifics
of the bare statistics which where released.
Firstly, it was mentioned that Buckfast Tonic Wine was mentioned in
5000 crime reports. Can I please know the exact number of reports
that this was mentioned in and over what date period this statistic
was sourced.
Secondly, can you please tell me how many crime reports in total
were made during that same date period .
Thirdly, can you please tell me how many of the total crime reports
in that time period involved alcohol in general, regardless of the
type of alcohol.
Lastly, it was indicated that 114 of those reports in that date
period mentioned that Buckfast Tonic Wine bottles had been used as
weapons. Can you please tell me how many crime reports mentioned
other alcohol related weapons such as beer bottles or glasses.
The statistics released which were released in the press are a
positive indicator that this information is held, and is available,
also that providing this information does not fall foul of other
legislation such as the Data Protection Act as no person can be
identified.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Christopher Miles

Mr Miles,
Please find attached the FOI release on this matter. You will see it is
caveated with an explanation of how the information was retrieved, at
least that which could be within cost. Parts of your request are
answered in the response.
Can I ask you examine it and come back with any update on your questions
or if they remain the same as cost of retrieval will likely be an issue
for us.
Best regards.

Mr Miles
In relation to the recent response I sent you to your Freedom of
Information request it has come to my attention that the figure given in
relation to the number of crime reports which include a crime/s of
violence and include the word 'buckfast' has been a typing error and
instead of the number 11 this should state 401.
I am still awaiting a response to question 10 of your request and this
should be with you as soon as possible.
Kind Regards
