Crime Maps Website Protection Facility

A Freedom of Information request to Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) by Harry Metcalfe

The request was successful.

Harry Metcalfe

23 September 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

You recently published a report on the implementation of crime
mapping:

http://www.mpa.gov.uk/committees/cop/200...

This report mentions that you will be single-tendering a "website
protection facility" for the crime mapping project: see "D.
Financial implications", final paragraph.

What is the "website protection facility" that this project
requires, and what makes it necessary to have it in order to
"progress the initial implementation of the project"?

Does the MPA intend to add other types of crime, for example,
violent crime, to the maps in the near future?

Yours faithfully,

Harry Metcalfe

Dear Mr Metcalfe

Freedom of Information Request Reference No: 2008090006511

I write in connection with your request for information dated 23 September
2009, which was received by the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) on

Following receipt of your request searches were conducted within the MPS
to locate information relevant to your request. I can confirm that the
information you have requested is held by the MPS.

EXTENT OF SEARCHES TO LOCATE INFORMATION

To locate the information relevant to your request searches were conducted
of the Department of Information and Territorial Policing H.Q.

DECISION

I have today decided to disclose the located information to you in full.

The reference to a 'website protection facility' in the M.P.A.
Coordination of Policing Committee (CoP) paper is synonymous with the
'capacity management and protection against system overload failure' also
referred to in this paper. This facility was provided to ensure the
website continued to function through the periods of high demand that
often accompany press launches, news items and similar announcements. The
launch of the crime mapping facility by another constabulary resulted in
unprecedented levels of demand. The MPS were keen to anticipate such an
eventuality in connection with our launch.

In response to the other question you raised about extending the crime
mapping facility to include other types of crimes, I would like to advise
you that the MPS is hoping to incorporate total notifiable offences (TNOs)
and anti social behaviour (ASB) as aggregated totals by the end of
December. We will also be considering adding further crime types as well
as breaking down the ASB figures in 2009.
