Costs to central and local government and charities of map licenses.

Ian Stirling made this Freedom of Information request to Ordnance Survey

The request was partially successful.

From: Ian Stirling

6 October 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

Can you inform me of the total expenditure of

A) Central government
B) Local government
C) Charitable organisations

on purchasing licenses or other OS mapping products in the
financial years 2005-6, 2006-7, 2007-8, and 2008-9.

For the same years the value of any licenses or other mapping
products that would have had to be paid if any reciprocal
agreements with regards to supply of data to the OS were not in
place. (for example, if a council shares any GPS survey work with
the OS for a reduced license fee)

Yours faithfully

Ian Stirling

I regret to inform you that Ordnance Survey is unable to your enquiry with
regards to part C) or with regard to the final part of your request as we
do not hold this information. The reasons for this are as follows:

C)         Whilst many charities license data from Ordnance
Survey, their accounts are managed in the same manner as all other
licensees of our data i.e. there are no special licensing arrangements for
the use of our data or mapping by charities.  The same terms and
conditions apply to all customers using our products.  As a consequence
of this we keep no information in our licensing records of any charitable
status which might be applied outside Ordnance Survey and we are therefore
unable to identify any expenditure by charitable organisations.

There are no reciprocal arrangements for the use of third party data in
Ordnance Survey products.  All such arrangements are governed through our
standard `Agreement for the supply of data or information to Ordnance
Survey' or through Procurement agreements where appropriate.

Please note that your enquiry has been processed to Freedom of Information
guidelines.  As all requested information has been provided, we have
determined that in all the circumstances of this case the Public
interest consideration (section 17 FOIA) is not applicable in this
instance.

If you are unhappy with our response, you may raise an appeal to our
Appeals Officer at:
