Dear Sir or Madam,

With regards to your online collections (i.e. website(s) that allow
users to browse your collection(s)), can you please detail:

1) How much it cost to put your collections online? (Not including
digitisation costs)

2) How many page views, on average, the online collections receive
per month?

3) If you have participated in any cross-institutional collections
projects (e.g. Europeana, People's Network, NMOLP), how much it
cost to make your collections available to the project (or how much
it is expected to cost, for current projects)?

Yours faithfully,

Dan Zambonini

Dear Dan Zambonini

Thank you for your recent FoI request to Tate. Could you clarify the first
question?

Do you want to find out how much it cost to put Tate Collection online
(not including digitisation costs)? Or are you asking what the ongoing
cost of running the Collection online is? Or is it that you want to find
out the cost of the original digitisation, minus the cost of
photographing the objects? I'm afraid we are not quite clear on this so,
if you could let me know, that would be very helpful.

Many thanks

Ruth Findlay

Dear Ruth Findlay,

Thanks very much for your response, and apologies for the lack of
clarity. I'm interested in the first of your questions: "How much
it cost to put Tate Collection online (not including digitisation
costs)".

Yours sincerely,

Dan Zambonini

Our ref: 185

Dear Dan Zambonini

Thank you for your request under the Freedom of Information Act dated and received on 10 February 2009. I have repeated your enquiry and provided answers below.

With regards to your online collections (i.e. website(s) that allow
users to browse your collection(s)), can you please detail:

1) How much it cost to put your collections online? (Not including
digitisation costs)

Tate ran two projects to digitise and put the images of our collection online: The British Art Information Project, funded by HLF and other donors, which took place between 2000 and 2002 and the (New Opportunities Fund) NOF Digitisation Project funded by NOF which took place over the course of 2002. The initial costs for building the website, excluding digitisation costs, was £78,712.51. The cost for the second wave of activity, excluding digitisation costs was £11,915. The project involved a multi-disciplinary team, including digitisation, and we have not included in these costs the salaries of staff working on the project.

2) How many page views, on average, the online collections receive
per month?

On average we receive around 1.8 million page views per month to the online collections.

3) If you have participated in any cross-institutional collections
projects (e.g. Europeana, People's Network, NMOLP), how much it
cost to make your collections available to the project (or how much
it is expected to cost, for current projects)?

We are participating in the NMOLP project. The cost to Tate of implementing and making available a cross collection search with NMOLP, and integrating this with the other participating museums and galleries, was £1782.20.
