A Freedom of Information request to Roads Service Northern Ireland by Darryl Collins
The request was successful.

Dear Sir or Madam,
Can you please tell me the total cost of the purchase, erection,
commissioning and annual operation (inc. service contract) of the
large two sided electronic sign in the middle of the carriageway on
Carnbane Hill between Sprucefield and Hillsborough?
And is there a plan to put useful traffic information on these
signs instead of inane slogans like "wise up slow down"?
Thank you for your help.
Yours faithfully,
Darryl Collins

Dear Mr Collins
In response to your email of 8 July 2008 and further to my email of 10 July 2008.
The total cost for the supply and installation, including civils works, of the two signs referred to in your email is £176404.73.
The operational costs for the signs will be in the region of £3240 per annum. It is not possible to give an exact cost as it is dependant upon usage of power and communications.
The capital costs have been part funded by EU as part of a joint cross border project called Instant involving the National Roads Authority in the Republic of Ireland and Roads Service in Northern Ireland.
One of the objectives of project is to provide timely and consistent travel information along the A1/M1 corridor between Belfast and Dublin.
The legend you mention forms part of a UK wide road safety campaign and, at the moment, we are using it to test the signs.
Legends appropriate to the prevailing traffic conditions will be used once testing and commissioning has been completed and the project launched.
I trust you find this useful.

Michael Davison

Dear Mr Davison
Many thanks for your full response to my FOI request. I certainly
hope that the sign will be used for something useful rather than
the inane slogans it currently displays!
Yours sincerely, Darryl Collins
