Cost of and frequency to restore the beach between Folkestone and Hythe Ranges
R D Prothero made this Freedom of Information request to Shepway District Council
The request was successful.
From: R D Prothero
26 March 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
Could you please tell me how much it has cost and who pays each
time the shingle beach between Folkestone and Hythe Ranges are
restored, also how many times this has been completed since 2005
Yours faithfully,
R D Prothero
Shepway District Council
30 March 2009
Dear Mr Prothero
Thank you for your request; firstly, I should point out that the beach is
`recycled' rather than `restored' as the question states. Two years of
beach recycling was included as part of the Hythe to Folkestone Harbour
Coast Protection Scheme which was funded by Defra and completed in 2004,
the recycling element being completed in 2006. There followed a funding
freeze for a year. The Council then applied for a grant to the
Environment Agency for further recycling which was successful and secured
£270,000 in 2008/09 (£50, 000 for emergency funding following the March
2008 storms and £220,000 for general recycling). There will be further
applications to Environment Agency for future years, estimated to be
£220,000 per year up to 2013. Recycling operations are carried out twice
a year (in Spring and Autumn).
