Dear Sir or Madam,
Please can you answer the Freedom of Information Act request below.
Please can you tell me how the Criminal Records Bureau ensures that
a first time applicant is not mixed up with another person who has
the same or similar personal information. For example, there may be
several Joe Bloggs living in a particular city, area, even street,
with a similar or the same date of birth.
Also, can you tell me what the procedure is for an application from
a person who shares the same details as somebody else? For example,
if you received an application from Joe Bloggs who was born on
01/01/1980 but by coicidence there was another Joe Bloggs with the
same date of birth living in the same city, area or street etc.
Can you also tell me of occasions when applicants have received a
copy of their disclosure and found it to be incorrect. For example,
containing convictions that were incorrect or had been placed on a
person's record by mistake. Can you also tell me if it is possible
to have an incorrect record changed or information removed.
Yours faithfully,
Nathan Winter

Dear Mr Winter,
Thank you for your enquiry.
However I would like to clarify the request you have made as
the first part falls outside of Freedom of Information as it is
a general question you have asked.
On receipt of a Disclosure application the Police National
Computer is consulted for any information held. If a close
match(es) are found then further details are investigated as
supplied on the application form to try and identify if the
record does or does not relate to the applicant. In such cases
it may be that the only way to eliminate an individual from a
PNC record is to request them to attend for fingerprints. I
hope this answers your question.
However the other information you have requested will be treated
as a Freedom of Information request however I would like to
clarify:
You are requesting how many Disclosures when disputed have been
found to be incorrect?
What period you require the statistics for?
On receipt of this information I will proceed with your request.
