Thank you for your email with your request for information under the

Mail to: [FOI #5873 email]
Date 5 February 2009

Dear Sir or Madam

Freedom of Information Act 2000 - Corporate Parent Training

I am writing about your recent request for information held by the Council
under the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2000.

I am able to confirm that there are no policies relating to the duties of
elected Members of the Council as Corporate Parents. As Borough
Councillors they have no direct involvement with children in the `care'
system. On this basis the Councillors are not CRB checked.

However, the Councillors are appointed to a number of outside bodies which
may have links to children in the `care' system and appointments made to
these bodies are only on the basis that if the organisation seeking this
appointment requires a CRB check that the Councillor will have to
undertake such a check. Additionally the Members are also informed that
they would have to comply with any training and any policies adopted by
the outside body. If they do not wish to comply with this particular
criterion, the appointment would not be confirmed by the authority and the
Council would seek to make a different appointment.

If you are unhappy with my response or wish to appeal against it you may
pursue any complaint through the Council's Complaints Procedure, by
writing to the Head of Corporate Law at London House, 5 11 London Road,
Maidstone, Kent ME16 8HR.

Should you remain dissatisfied with his response you may appeal to the
Information Commissioner, Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow SK9 5AF.

Yours sincerely

Dear Emma Apps,

If 'Borough Councillors have no direct involvement with children in
the 'care'
system.'

Can you please clarify how the above legislation is incorporated?

Yours sincerely,

S Smith

Dear Sir or Madam

Thank you for your earlier email received earlier regarding the above subject.

The document which you attached relates to children in the 'care' system linked to social services, both social services and education and is a County Council function. Therefore, it is the County Councillors that might have a direct involvement in children in the 'care' system and as such might require County Councillor training you refer to.

I hope this answers your queries.

Yours faithfully
