Dear Mr Gleeson,

Re: Environmental Information Request - Location Information for
Conservation Areas

Thank you for your email on 7 August in which you ask for "a dataset, in
shapefile format, of digital polygon boundaries for all conservation areas
in England as designated by Local Planning Authorities and compiled by
English Heritage."

Having considered the information that you have requested I have concluded
that it is environmental information and so have considered your request
under the Environmental Information Regulations 2004 (the EIR).

I am afraid that English Heritage does not hold a central list of
Conservation Areas and I am therefore - under regulation 12(4)(a) of the
EIR - unable to consider the information that you have requested for
release. If this kind of data are needed individual members of staff will
approach the relevant Local Planning Authority (LPA) and the LPA then
send them the data direct. Therefore we do not hold a complete set of
data and, as it not held centrally, cannot easily find out what data we do
hold.

You may be interested to know that English Heritage has offered to publish
Conservation Area data in a single national dataset on behalf of all LPAs.
It is hoped that we will be able to provide a publicly accessible spatial
dataset of all Conservation Areas in England at some point during 2012.

I am sorry that I have been unable to provide you with the information
that you have asked for on this occasion. If you are unhappy with the
response that you have received you may request an internal review.
Details of our review procedure are attached.

Yours sincerely,

Jessica Trevitt

Dear Jessica,

Thank you for a prompt and informative reply. I am pleased to hear
that the data may be available in 2012. For your info, I was
prompted to make the request by an entry on data.gov.uk
(http://data.gov.uk/dataset/conservation-...), which gives the
impression (to me, at least) that the data is already available.

Yours sincerely,

Jim Gleeson

Dear Mr Gleeson,

Thank you for your email. I have looked into your query and while it has taken me longer than I had hoped to be in a position to reply to you, I trust that you will find the following useful.

As I said in my initial email downloads will be available for Conservation Areas in 2012, though I'm afraid that I can't say exactly when, or how complete the dataset will be. The Web Mapping Service (WMS), which currently has 44% coverage, meets our legal requirements to publish the Conservation Area data (plus our other Statutory data). If you have GIS you can access the WMS using the following link: http://www.geostore.com/OGC/OGCInterface....

Kind regards,

Jessica Trevitt
