Condition of Mobile Library Vehicle

Paul Perrin made this Freedom of Information request to Brighton and Hove City Council

Brighton and Hove City Council did not have the information requested.

From: Paul Perrin

7 January 2012

Dear Brighton and Hove City Council,

The currently proposed budget suggests the existing mobile library
vehicle needs replacing, but a replacement cannot be afforded, so
the service may be cut.

As a new vehicle is said to be unaffordable, I would like to know
what it is about the condition of the existing vehicle that makes
it beyond economic repair for future service.

Yours faithfully,

Paul Perrin

Regarding your request for information  under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000:  Ref:  foi/018/12

“The currently proposed budget suggests the existing mobile library

vehicle needs replacing, but a replacement cannot be afforded, so

     the service may be cut.

As a new vehicle is said to be unaffordable, I would like to know

what it is about the condition of the existing vehicle that makes

it beyond economic repair for future service.”

Please find set out below the information in response to the above
request:

“The mobile library vehicle is normally replaced every seven years; the
current vehicle came into service in April 2004 so was due for replacement
in April 2011.  The vehicle is in constant use six days a week, and is
reaching the end of its natural life.  A new vehicle would cost at least
£120,000.  The running costs of the current vehicle and service are
£77,000 per year. These costs are increasing with the introduction of new
training requirements for LGV drivers, and the growing cost of fuel and
increased maintenance as the vehicle gets older.”
