Dear Vanita Patel,

Just to confirm the situation, are you implying that you don't
record complaints against the LGO and that the only way you can
identify the number of complaints submitted to your office over the
last five years is to look at every letters received by your office
over that period?

If that is the case I would like to know how you keep ministers
aware of the number of complaints against the LGO.

Yours sincerely,

Trevor R Nunn

Dear Sir or Madam,

Please pass this on to the person who conducts Freedom of
Information reviews.

I am writing to request an internal review of Department for
Communities and Local Government's handling of my FOI request
'Complaints about the Local Government Ombudsman'.

CLG is on record stating that they get get very few complaints
about the LGO, How do they know if they don't keep records? Is it
the department or the minister who produces the number of
complaints out of thin air?

A full history of my FOI request and all correspondence is
available on the Internet at this address:
http://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/co...

Yours faithfully,

Trevor R Nunn

Dear Sir or Madam,

Further to my request for an internal review I would like to add
the following. You state that not all correspondence received in
the Department about the Local Government Ombudsman are complaints.

How do you know if you don't record what the correspondence is
about?

I find it hard to believe that you record/note none complaint
correspondence about the LGO but don't record/note complaints.

Yours faithfully,

Trevor R Nunn

This is the relevant part of the internal review regarding this FOI request.

Having carefully reviewed the papers for F0003369, although I believe that your request for information was fully met, I think that aspects of the reply could have been clarified in more detail. The reply you have received sets out the way that this Department monitors correspondence, and notes that all correspondence is recorded by the subject area concerned. The reply could have offered more information about how this Department monitors complaints and how Ministers are made aware of complaints about Local Government Ombudsmen.

I have referred the case back to the business area concerned, and asked that they reconsider their response to you, and respond to the points above in more detail. This further response is due within twenty working days of the date of this letter.

I'd like to know too! Maybe you could conduct a survey on the Ombudsmanwatch web site as to how many people have written a letter of complaint about the LGO to the DCLG and/or their MP?

Keep up the good work - it is much appreciated!

We have found our local Ombudsman totally pointless. She took possibly three years to come to a decision on an important planning issue, and then it was just a complete whitewash.
