Complaints

Trevor R Nunn made this Freedom of Information request to East Cambridgeshire District Council

The request was successful.

From: Trevor R Nunn

5 October 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

Pre-question clarification: A complaint against a council may
consist purely on an administrative error or it may also include a
potentially criminal act and/or infringements of a complainants
civil rights (legal and/or human rights).

Therefore, I would like the following information, over the last 12
months, as a percentage of total complaints against the council how
many ended up being dealt with by,

1)the Local Government Ombudsman?

2)the Police?

3)Solicitors and/or the courts?

Yours faithfully,

Trevor R Nunn

Dear Jeanette Thompson,

I submitted the request in question. Although I used the What Do
Know website, which has been set up to allow people to submit
requests electronically, I have, other than as a user of their
service, no connection with them.

The information I seek is nothing more than any other member of the
public in the country can ask for under the freedom of information
act.

I mean external Solicitors rather than internal.

Yours sincerely,

Trevor R Nunn

Dear Mr Nunn

I will be happy to confirm numbers, but if you wish to work out percentages, that would involve creation of the information and this is not something the Council is required to do under the provisions of the FOIA.

We had 131 complaints between 30 June 2007 & 30 September 2008 (this covered a variety of matters - allegations of maladministration or other matters). These are dealt with under the complaint system - or may progress to the LG Ombudsman. The local Government Ombudsman has remit for maladministration, but would not normally deal with other matters (such as criminal or civil rights claims). The LGO website provides complaints information on a spreadsheet for 2007/08
http://www.lgo.org.uk/letters/2007-08/do...

The Police/ external solicitors are not usually involved in the above matters, and were not, as far as I am aware involved.

In terms of criminal acts or infringement of complainants civil right by the Council through external complaint, no actual claims were issued/ raised against the Council in the last 12 months that ended up being dealt with by the Police or external solicitors. Therefore the answers to questions 2 & 3 are:
2. None.
3. None.

Please note the previous advice that re-use of the Council's information has to be through application. No consent is implied through supply of this information by email for re-use.
