Common Purpose Charity Status

Ken made this Freedom of Information request to Charity Commission for England and Wales

Charity Commission for England and Wales did not have the information requested.

From: Ken

23 September 2009

Dear Sir or Madam,

How does this organisation retain its charity status when it's
clearly designed to benefit only the rich or those who work for a
department which is willing to pay their exhorbitant fees for
"training".

How is this benefitting the public exactly?

How many benefit claimants or low income family members have been
invited to attend Common Purpose Training?

Yours faithfully,

Ken Boyce

Thank you for your email to the Charity Commission.

If we cannot give you a full response within fifteen days, we will contact
you and let you know the reasons why this is not possible and indicate
when we expect to be in a position to give you a full response. We will

Is this a request for recorded information?
I've lost count of the number of requests about Common Purpose on this site. I've never even heard of them.

Charity Commission for England and Wales

Dear Mr Boyce

Thank you for your e-mail of 23 September. I note that you have framed it
as a FOI request, possibly because it was sent via the
***whatdotheyknow*** website, but we consider it to be a complaint about
Common Purpose, rather than a FOI request. It may be helpful if I outline
our role and our approach to complaints about charities.

The Charity Commission is the independent regulator of charities in
England and Wales. Our job as regulator is to work closely with charities
to ensure that they are accountable, well run and meet their legal
obligations under charity law in order to promote public trust and
confidence. As a regulator, we have a duty to consider concerns brought to
our attention. However, our statutory powers of intervention are limited
and trustees have a broad discretion to manage their charity as they see
fit, within charity law and the charity***s own governing document. We are
by law not permitted to interfere in the administration of a charity or
become involved in its internal affairs. Additionally, we would not take
up complaints where it would be disproportionate to do so, or where
another regulator is better placed to examine the concerns. Our role is
set out in our guidance CC47, ***Complaints about Charities***, available
at the following link:

[1]http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/publ...

Your query about how many benefit claimants or low income family members
have been invited to attend Common Purpose training and your allegations
about the charity***s work generally should be directed to the charity via
its registered correspondent, available at this link:

[2]http://www.charitycommission.gov.uk/Show...

Common Purpose is established for exclusively charitable purposes and for
the public benefit and is therefore a registered charity. We are aware of
various negative comments on the internet to which the charity has
responded. There are no grounds for us to reconsider its charity status.

Yours sincerely

Neil Darlow

I also have been complaining of the charitable status of Common Purpose. This is what they were set up to "acheive", and there is "no evidence" to suggest they are acting outside these paremeters (according to the charities commission). Of course it is not easy to obtain evidence regarding such a secretive organisation. If you have any physical evidence I would love to see it!

"The advancement of education for the public benefit and in particular but without prejudice to the generality of the foregoing to educate men and women from a broad range of geographical political ethnic institutional social and economic backgrounds in constitutional civic economic and social studies with special emphasis on civil and social awareness and responsibility in the United Kingdom and elsewhere provided always that nothing contained in the Memorandum and Articles of Association shall authorise or be deemed to authorise the carrying on of any activity for any purposes save those regarded as charitable by the laws of England and Wales."
