Dear Mr Mason,
Thank you for your request for information made under the Freedom of
Information Act 2000 ("the Act"), which we received on January 12th. In
your request, you said:
"Further to the recent announcement that Oona King is to be appointed as
Channel 4's head of diversity, can you please clarify her annual
remuneration for this post and how much of that is to be met by tax payers
money".
We have responded to your queries in turn below:
Oona King's annual remuneration
Please note that in accordance with the Information Commissioner's
guidance and decisions, individuals who do not have a significant
responsibility for the expenditure of public funds and/or the creation of
public policy have a reasonable expectation that details of their salary
will not be made public and therefore disclosure of those details would be
unfair in the context of the Data Protection Act 1988. As Oona King will
neither be responsible for the expenditure of public funds nor the
creation of public policy, this information is exempt from
disclosure under section 40(2) of the Act.
In addition, Oona King's employment contract is subject to a restriction
regarding confidential information and this information has the quality of
confidence about it. Disclosure of the information to the public would
therefore, additionally, constitute an actionable breach of confidence.
Accordingly, this information is also exempt from disclosure under section
41 of the Act.
How this post is funded
Please note that unlike the BBC, which receives the licence fee, Channel 4
receives no public funding. It is funded entirely by its own commercial
activities principally the sale of advertising. Accordingly, we confirm
that none of Oona King's salary will be met with tax payer money. More
