Home Office did not have the information requested.
From: Peter Maxwell

Dear Home Office,
I understand from a recent article in the Telegraph (
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/c...
) that the Home Office, Centre for Applied Science and Technology,
are intending to trial the SMU100 device manufactured by Photonic
Security Systems Ltd as part of a review into alternative
less-than-lethal weapons for British Police forces.
Would you please supply by return any documents or records you have
in your possession that are sufficient to detail the following
operational properties of the SMU100 device (or a summary of the
following would also suffice):
i. what type of laser the device uses;
ii. what safety class does the laser fall into, cf. IEC 60825;
iii. what is the power output of the laser;
iv. what wavelength of light is emitted by the laser;
v. is the laser continuous or pulsed, and if pulsed what is the
pulse duration and number of pulses per second;
vi. what are the diffusion characteristics of the laser emission.
Thank you kindly for your assistance and if you need any further
information in relation to this request, please do not hesitate to
ask.
Yours sincerely,
Peter Maxwell

Dear K Sawyer,
Thank you for your help and time.
Could I ask two quick questions:
- do you know when CAST will receive the specifications, so that I
may resubmit a request at that time (I'd assume CAST will have to
have the specifications to perform the requisite tests of the
equipment);
- do you know of another public authority that would be likely to
hold the information?
Again, thank you for your help,
Yours sincerely,
Peter Maxwell

Dear Mr Maxwell,
With regard to your follow up questions
- do you know when CAST will receive the specifications, so that I
may resubmit a request at that time (I'd assume CAST will have to
have the specifications to perform the requisite tests of the
equipment);
- do you know of another public authority that would be likely to
hold the information?
We have not been asked to test this device, so I cannot give you any
specific time frames and yes we would want the specification. I checked
with the Public Order Unit in the central Home Office before I responded
to you, they do not hold any information either. Another option would be
to contact the manufacturers directly, as they may have an intention to
have us test the equipment some time in the future. They should also be
able to give you the specification.
Kind regards
Karen Sawyer
