Max Galstaun made this Freedom of Information request to Foreign and Commonwealth Office
The request was successful.
From: Max Galstaun
7 July 2009
Dear Sir or Madam,
1. Before and recently after Indian Independence on 15th August
1947 the UK Govt. through its various offices, known as the High
Commissions or Dy. High Commissions all over India owned and/or
managed a large number of cemeteries.
2. At some later date a decision was taken to hand over these
cemeteries to various local "Trusts" or other bodies in India,
unknown yet to the Indian Christian public or any public at all.
3. I am requesting you, under the Freedom of Information Act, to
release to me copies of all the above information in your files,
that may be contained in hard written copy or in electronic format
like emails, or computer files or in any other means or forms.
4. I understand that the records may be many. I shall be satisfied
if scanned copies are sent to me on CD via MSWORD format.
Thank you,
Yours faithfully,
MR KHATCHATURIAN

Dear Sir or Madam,
I have read your response which is enclosed in the attachment.
I fail to understand why you are again directing me to the national
archives etc.
Let me put some facts before you that may enable you to concentrate
your mind before you reply to me again.
1. I had asked you about all the Cemeteries in India. You have said
that it would be quite a task, and would involve a lot of work etc.
You said it would help if I would narrow down my search.
2. I have narrowed down my search. I have asked you for material
concerning the Bhowanipore Cemetery Calcutta. That is quite a
narrowing down.
3. The Bhowanipore Cemetery, Calcutta, is also a War Graves
Commission graveyard. Therefore, it is right to assume that there
is existing and ongoing files of this Cemetery with the Dy. High
Commission, Calcutta.
4. I do not think that there are such huge volumes of files that it
will cause an extra-ordinary strain on the resources of the post at
Calcutta to furnish the information.
5. In short Sir, please furnish the information I require on the
Bhowanipore Cemetery.Enough time has passed with excuses.
Yours faithfully,
Max Galstaun
