CCTV funding £900,000.00

Mr & Mrs Hutch made this Freedom of Information request to Canterbury City Council

The request was successful.

From: Mr & Mrs Hutch

2 November 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

Re CCTV funding Website text:

"The Council has received over £900,000 of Government funding for
cameras throughout the district over the last few years. The awards
are a result of successful competitive bid for cash and is by far
the largest slice of funding to be awarded in the south east."

Please advise how the funding was distributed between the District
i.e how much for Whitstable, how much for Herne Bay and how much
for Canterbury

How many CCTV cameras per Town

Position of cameras for each town

where monitoring costs are derived.

Are there any other CCTV cameras operated in addition to this
scheme, for instance. Are the CCTV cameras in Memorial Park Herne
Bay covered under this scheme or by another operator.

Is the whole area of the Memorial Park covered. Is it safe for the
commuter to walk through the park from the Station in darkness. Is
the new youth Centre in the park covered so that children are safe.

Thank you

Yours faithfully,

Mrs Hutch

Canterbury Closed Circuit Television
Canterbury City Council has a closed circuit television system to help provide a safer environment for everyone by:

reducing the fear of crime.
protecting property and deterring vandalism.
assisting in the detection and prevention of crime.
helping to catch and prosecute those who commit crime or public order offences.
assisting in the management of traffic and pedestrian flow.
Cameras have been installed throughout the district in shopping and commercial areas, car parks and Council buildings. The camera network is monitored and recorded 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at a Central Control Centre and images are recorded and kept in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998 and the CCTV Code of Practice 2008.

The system is owned by Canterbury City Council, and the Control Centre is staffed by fully trained closed circuit television surveillance operators. The service has been developed and managed in partnership with Kent Police and monitors and controls have been installed with Kent Police - allowing Police officers to maintain an overview of the system and its use.

The service operates to a strict Code of Practice which not only sets rules and guidelines on the way the system is used, but also confirms that the system will be operated to a high standard with due regard for civil liberties and data protection.

The Council has received over £900,000 of Government funding for cameras throughout the district over the last few years. The awards are a result of successful competitive bid for cash and is by far the largest slice of funding to be awarded in the south east.
