CCTV footage - N155 bus 8 July 2011

Yancey Westerfield made this Freedom of Information request to Transport for London

The request was partially successful.

From: Yancey Westerfield

17 July 2011

Dear Transport for London,

I am requesting, under the Freedom of Information Act, bus-mounted
CCTV footage you have of me entering the N155 bus on 8 July 2011 at
approximately 04:04 AM at the Elephant and Castle / London Road bus
stop C.

I had entered the front doors of the N155 bus and was waiting to
tap my Oyster card when an individual grabbed my phone from behind
me and ran off. Any CCTV footage would assist with the
investigation into this robbery and possibly help identify the
person who stole my phone.

Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yours faithfully,

Yancey Westerfield

I don't think you'll get anywhere with this request as it's not an FoI request.

Why don't you ask the Police investigating the incident to contact London Buses for the CCTV footage - one thing to bear in mind is how long will the data be available on the bus before its overwritten.

Dear Sir / Madam

Re: Bus Route N155 CCTV Request

Thank you for your email dated 17 July, requesting the CCTV footage from a
route N155 bus. I am sorry to read of the incident you were involved in
while travelling on a London bus.

CCTV cameras and footage on buses are the responsibility of private bus
operating companies, and as such the Freedom of Information Act would
not apply in this case. However, under the Data Protection Act 1998, you
may be entitled to footage in which you appear. Any request for CCTV
footage should be submitted to the bus operator in question.

Your request has been forwarded to London General, who operate route 155
on behalf of Transport for London (TfL). Please find the contact details
for London General below in order for you to pursue your request:

Tel: 020 8417 8570

London General Head Office

18 Merton High Street

London

It is worth noting that the length of time that footage from bus CCTV
cameras is retained is dependent on the size of the hard drive fitted to
the bus. Typically data would begin to be overwritten after seven to ten
days.

Thank you for your correspondence. Please feel free to contact me if I can
be of further assistance.

Yours sincerely

Paul Lawley

Dear Yancey,

RE: Public communication (1910181-1009209272) received at Sutton Garage on
19^th July 2011

I am writing in response to your communication, regarding an incident on
the morning of 8^th July 2011 on a Route N155 bus. I was genuinely
concerned to hear about this incident.

Whilst I consider this incident to be a very serious matter, I regret to
say that we have been unable to retrieve any CCTV evidence of the incident
in question, due to the fact that our CCTV system retains a maximum of 7
days' worth of CCTV data, before being overwritten.

Unfortunately, as we were not made aware of this incident for 11 days, the
requested data has since been overwritten.

Please accept my sincere apologies for not being able to assist you
further in this matter.

Yours sincerely

Mark Cambridge
