Dear Mr Bridle
Thank you for your email received by Transport for London (TfL) on 11th
August 2009. You asked for information information on TfL's total budget
for CCTV across the London Bus Network
Your request has been considered under the requirements of the Freedom of
Information Act and I can confirm that TfL does hold the information you
require. Please find this below:
We do not have a separate budget for CCTV alone. CCTV forms part of the
specification for the entire bus, thus the initial cost and on-going
maintenance is included within the overall price for individual bus route
contracts.
The initial cost to design, supply and retro-fit the bus network with CCTV
was £3,500 per vehicle for around 8,000 buses when full scale
installation began in 2006. The on-going cost is significantly lower with
volume production.
If this is not the information you are looking for, please do not hesitate
to contact me.
Please see the information sheet below for details of your right to appeal
as well as information on copyright and what to do if you would like to
re-use any of the information we have disclosed.
Yours sincerely

That may be true - but I have to admit, that my interest in posting the request was to compare it to the cost of re-introducing conductors. While feelings as to their efficacy this may differ, £3,500 to permanently equip a bus with CCTV is definitely a lower cost than permanently employing a conductor.

Quite right, I have never been to London (terrible, I know) and up here in Middlesbrough buses have neither conductors or CCTV, a few of the newer buses do, but a majority do not.
But also then upkeep of the cameras, storage of the film, and other factors that also need to be considered. And CCTV is really only useful for after a crime has been committed, where as a conductor could potentially get the help needed to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place.
