Calculation of Student Finance Repayments for Withdrawn Students
Mr A.L. Tanner made this Freedom of Information request to Ceredigion Council
The request was successful.
From: Mr A.L. Tanner
21 June 2011
Dear Ceredigion Council,
I am a former student who was expelled from a higher education
course at a college in the spring term of 2010, and I had applied
for student finance for the year.
Although only two terms of student finance were paid to me and I
had attended most of these two terms as well as paying a
substantial amount of tuition fees out of my own pocket (only a
partial grant for fees and a student loan for maintenance were
applied for), a massive amount of repayment of loan and grant was
requested from the local authority and the Student Loans Company
upon receipt of notification of expulsion from the course in March
2010. The sums demanded far exceeded a reasonable amount for the
number of days I spent out of college.
I therefore request the methods for calculating the amounts
involved in demands for repayment when students leave early,
because I strongly believe that a "cover up" between local
authorities, local governments and the Student Loans Company is in
effect nationwide. Multiple requests to the Student Loans Company
and the Welsh Assembly Government to reveal such methodology have
been declined.
The above "cover up" is best described as a conspiracy to take
advantage of students, who are often among the lowest paid and
highest indebted members of society. Shame on you all!
Yours faithfully,
Mr A.L. Tanner
