Mr M Ereira [email address]

Dear Mr Ereira

Freedom of Information request - Bus stop queries

I write further to our email of 9 February and your two emails on
the above matter.

Your request has been considered under the Freedom of Information
Act 2000 and the information you have requested is enclosed.

Can you please advise that when considering siting a new bus stop
the minimum width in your guidelines that a pavement has to be
overall and the minimum space that is left for members of the
public to pass.

The only ‘fixed’ measurements used in the siting of bus stops and
shelters is 600mm, which is the distance between any structure and
the kerb edge. Other than this, each situation is dealt with on an
individual basis. After being agreed with the local authority, the
position of any stop or shelter is then subject to the approval of
the Local Authority Highways Department and the Metropolitan
Police. I have attached a copy of the Bus Priority Technical advice
note BP1/06 ‘Accessible bus stop design guidance’ document which is
intended as a guide to assist highway authorities in the
development of practical and affordable measures to improve
accessibility at bus stops. It also includes recommended dimensions
and guidelines when siting a bus stop.

Please also advise whether there are similar guidelines for the
siting of bus shelters

Please refer to the attached document, Bus Priority Technical
advice note BP1/06 ‘Accessible bus stop design guidance’, in
particular page 19, which illustrates the three general layouts for
the bus passenger shelter. It also includes recommended dimensions
and guidelines when siting a bus shelter.

The pavement width spacing figures used when siting 'The Great
South West Road/Hatton Road ' and 'Hatton Green' bus stops in the
Hounslow area and advise the full list of criteria used when siting
the Great West Road bus stop?

Unfortunately, having searched our records and taken all reasonable
steps to locate it, we have not been able to source the information
concerned, therefore, as far as we are able to determine, TfL does
not hold the information. The bus stops in question were installed
approximately 20 years ago. Due to the length of time that has
elapsed since the installations, we no longer hold the requested
information. As a result, we will not be taking any further action
on your request under the provisions of the Act.

Thank you again for taking the time to write. If I can be of any
help in the future, please feel free to contact me.

Yours sincerely

Anne Sunyer Head of Customer Services
