Request for information: 2012010025 - Budget for Jubilee celebrations

You asked: Could you please advise the level of expenditure that has been
included in budgets specifically for any activities concerning the royal
jubilee 'celebrations'? Please include projected costs for gifts, travel,
events, etc.  Please advise also any costs that have already been
incurred.

Our Response: At the present time no budget has been allocated or
expenditure made with regard to the royal jubilee celebrations.

However we recently received a request for information about plans for
celebrations and I have included this below for your information.

Details (including projected costs) of any plans you have to mark the
Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Thank you for your recent FOI request regarding HM The Queen’s Diamond
Jubilee and the Council’s plans to celebrate this special occasion.

You will probably be aware that each County in the UK has a
Lord-Lieutenant who is The Queen’s personal representative for that area.
I am aware that the Lord-Lieutenant of Shropshire has a number of
projects he is working on to mark the Diamond Jubilee together with
voluntary bodies, Shropshire businesses, Telford & Wrekin Council and
Shropshire Council.

The Queen’s Pageant Master has written to us to inform us about the
Diamond Jubilee Beacons.  The Council will almost certainly be holding an
official Council Beacon lighting event but the details for this will not
be finalised until the New Year.  The costs of holding the event have not
yet been determined but we do not envision this being an expensive event
to arrange.

We are aware that the Lord-Lieutenant is intending to hold two county
church services in celebration of Her Majesty’s reign. One of these will
take place at Shrewsbury Abbey and the other at St. George’s in Telford.
The Council will be officially represented at both of these services.

The Lord-Lieutenant working with Shropshire Council and Telford & Wrekin
Council are hoping to hold a special Diamond Jubilee county event which
will embrace the very best of Shropshire through the last sixty years.  At
this stage the suggested project is very much in the planning stage and
all parties understand the financial climate that we are living in at the
present time.

In the New Year I understand that the Lord-Lieutenant will be writing to
all the schools in Shropshire and will propose Diamond Jubilee school
competitions in particular areas such as the arts.  He has also written to
all Parish and Town Councils in Shropshire encouraging them to hold
Diamond Jubilee events in their Parishes and Towns.   We understand that
he has received a number of positive responses with many Parish and Town
Councils having the Diamond Jubilee as an agenda item at their meetings.

As we are still over six months away from the official Diamond Jubilee
weekend I am sure that there will be other Diamond Jubilee activities and
events that the Council will be supporting but which have not presently be
conceived.  The Council is certainly keen to do what it can to support the
Diamond Jubilee year.

Dear Shropshire Council,

When I asked for information concerning the amount to be spent by
Shropshire Council with regard to the Jubilee 'Celebrations' you
were unable to answer the question saying that the information was
not available.

Now that we are closer to the event and in the new financial year,
please revisit the question and advise what costs have been
incurred and what is included in the budget for any expenses that
will be incurred in 'celebration' of the jubilee.

Yours faithfully,

Steve Burge

Dear Mr Burge

Re: Information Request - Reference Number: 2012050010

Thank you for your email received on 3 May 2012.  Your email was labelled
as a request for an internal review of a previous request, reference
number 2012010025.  I would be grateful if you could whether you require
an internal review or just an updated position of the request.

The original request was for: the level of expenditure that has been
included in budgets specifically for any activities concerning the royal
jubilee 'celebrations'? Please include projected costs for gifts, travel,
events, etc.  Please advise also any costs that have already been
incurred.

We responded to say: at the present time no budget has been allocated or
expenditure made with regard to the royal jubilee celebrations.
We will proceed on the basis that you are just requesting an updated
position on this request rather than an internal review unless we hear
otherwise.  Your request will be processed according to the relevant
legislation and we will respond to you within 20 working days.

You have asked for the current position on:
1.        costs and expenses that have been incurred in 'celebration' of
the jubilee
2.        the budget for any expenses that will be incurred in
'celebration' of the jubilee

If you feel the information is inaccurate or requires amendment, please
notify us as soon as possible using the contact details provided below.

30 May 2012

Dear Mr Burge

Request for information: 2012050010 – Jubilee Celebrations

Further to your Freedom of Information request which we received on 3 May
2012, we reply as follows.

You requested the following details:

1.        Costs and expenses that have been incurred in 'celebration' of
the jubilee
2.        The budget for any expenses that will be incurred in
'celebration' of the jubilee

Funding to meet the costs of these celebrations is being obtained by the
Lord Lieutenant from a variety of sources, with the intention of meeting
the costs involved in full. Shropshire Council is supporting the Queen's
Diamond Jubilee Pageant at RAF Cosford on the 12 July. The event, which to
date has over 22,000 people registered for tickets (and an expected
audience of 30,000 local people) is aiming to be self-financing through
donations and commercial income and is being led by the Lord Lieutenant.

Until the event is completed, it would be difficult to give a definite
figure in relation to the total costs and expenses incurred and at which
point the information would be held by the Lord Lieutenant and not
Shropshire Council. Should funding be needed to cover any shortfall in
income generated, then Shropshire Council has agreed to underwrite this,
up to a maximum sum of £50,000.

For information about the event, please visit the website at the link
below:

We trust that this answers your request satisfactorily.
