British Citizenship, border security and deportations
A Freedom of Information request to UK Border Agency by Simon Wright
The request was partially successful.

Dear Sir or Madam, I have several questions i would like answered
under the Freedom of Information act.
1) How many people with a criminal record of violent crime (How
many Murderers?, Rapists? and Child Sex Offenders - Both in the UK
and in other countries) have been granted British Citizenship in
the past year and previous year.
2) How many people granted British citizenship in the past have had
their Citizenship withdrawn by the UK government and is there a
chart showing what the main reasons for citizenship withdrawal have
been (for example, 25% were due to fraud issues)
3) What is the most accurate or latest estimate on the % of trucks
or cargo searched or checked before entering the United Kingdom
since the border agency was introduced.
4) How many illegal immigrants / failed asylum seekers are
currently being held or have been released because the United
Kingdom is unable to deport them to their home nation because of
the Human Rights Act of 1998 which incorporated The European
Convention on Human Rights into British law.
5) Is there a list of the countries the UK authorities are unable
to deport people to because of the Human Rights Act or other laws /
rulings which prevent people from being returned.
I hope you can answer the above questions and i have sent them to
the right location, If some of the above questions should of been
sent to different locations such as the Home Office or MOJ please
can you let me know or pass it on. Thanks in advance.
Yours faithfully,
Simon Wright

Dear Freedom Of Information Team ( IND ),
On the 16th of October i received a confirmation email saying my
freedom of information request had been received. Over 20 days have
passed and i was under the impression it was a legal requirement to
receive a response on a freedom of Information request within that
time period.
Could you please respond to my request as soon as possible or
inform me if there was a problem, thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Simon Wright

Dear Mr Feakins,
Thank you very much for your response to my freedom of information
request which provided me with a lot of the answers that i was
looking for. Your answers to Q3, Q4 and Q5 were exactly what i was
after.
On Q1 i understand the problem of cost if all the data on that
issue is held on separate files. If i asked for the numbers of
those granted British citizenship last year that simply have a
criminal record (just in this country, and without the break down
of types of crime, so everything from not paying their tv license
to murder at the time they were granted citizenship) would that
single figure be easier for you to locate and provide or more
difficult? If that would also be too expensive, could you please
let me know what sort of data on criminals getting citizenship you
think you would be able to provide?
On Q2, Would it be possible for you just to provide me with the
number of people who had their British citizenship revoked last
year without the breakdown on reasons. (if that number is easily
available, could i get the figures for the past few years for
comparison?
Thank you very much for the help so far, i hope you can assist me
with those first two questions
Yours sincerely,
Simon Wright

Dear Mr Wright,
Sorry for the delay in responding to your further questions, but I have
been out of the office.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to provide you with the information
you require relating to possible criminal convictions in either refused
or granted nationality applications because the information would be
held on individual files, which we would need to examine to retrieve the
information.
It maybe helpful if I elaborate further on how information on
nationality applications is stored and captured. If a case was refused
because of the applicant's criminal record, the computer system would
simply record the outcome as being refused but not the specific reason
of the refusal, which would be held on the paper file.
Subsequently the same would be true of a grant of nationality it would
not be possible to check whether the applicant had been convicted of a
crime without cross referencing the paper file although if the applicant
did not meet the requirements of the Immigration Rules concerning
Nationality, the application would be refused.
Given the number of paper files that would need to be examined, it would
not be possible to conduct a search.
Again, it is not possible to provide you with information on the number
or revoked nationality cases as the information is not recorded
separately, and nationality files would need to be examined to ascertain
whether citizenship had been revoked.
I hope I have been able to the clarify the matter.
Yours sincerely,
Mr Feakins,
