Bridge Numbers on NIR Network

Gavin Bamford made this Freedom of Information request to Northern Ireland Transport Holding Company

The request was successful.

Gavin Bamford

27 November 2008

Dear Sir or Madam,

It has been common practice from historical times to number bridges
(over & under railway lines) with a unique reference number and to
attach a metal plate bearing that number on to the structure.

Can you publish a list of all bridge numbers and locations of all
structures that run over or under the NIR network?

If possible, please supply the historical number [eg GNR(I) 123],
current number (if different from histrical number), over or under
bridge / structure, location address and national grid reference.

Yours faithfully,

Gavin Bamford

Dear Mr. Bamford,

Further to my earlier e-mail acknowledgements, I am now in a position to
respond in more detail to your request for information.

Please find attached a copy of our current Bridge Register. This
contains all the up to date basic data we have on bridges and culverts
crossing the NI Railways network. Other historic data is held in paper
archive records, however it would involve a considerable amount of
time/resources and, ultimately, cost to retrieve this.

However, if you wish to spend time reviewing these historical records
for yourself, we would be happy to make them available at our offices.
Should you wish to pursue this option please contact our Head of
Structures, Mr. Mark Atkinson, on 028 9035 4075.

I trust the foregoing deals with the various queries which you raised.
If you are not satisfied with this reply you may complain to the
Translink Marketing Executive, who has overall responsibility for
Freedom of Information issues within Translink or the Director of
Corporate Affairs, who has such responsibility within the Northern
Ireland Transport Holding Company.

If we are then unable to resolve any complaint that you may have, you
may refer the matter to the Information Commissioner who will make an
independent judgement. The address of the Information Commissioner is:
Wycliffe House, Water Lane, Wilmslow, Cheshire, SK9 5AT. The address of
the Information Commissioner's Office for Northern Ireland is: 51
Adelaide Street, Belfast, BT2 8FE.

Yours sincerely,

Janice Davidson
