BIS Structure and Budgets
Benjamin Jones made this Freedom of Information request to Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
The request was partially successful.
From: Benjamin Jones
19 February 2010
Dear Department for Business, Innovation and Skills,
Please could you inform me of the names of all organisations under
the BIS "banner" eg Tribunal NDPB,Executive Agencies/NDPB ect "the
whole shooting match"
also as part of that information could you highlight the number of
staff each "child" organisation employs and the budget they receive
from BIS annually most recently.
This should be the most recent report ideally, covering the 09/10
year if possible.
On top of the above could you also inform me of the current
structure in relation to the merge with the DIUS and where that is
up to so far (have all staff moved over and changed their emails
ect or is there still a function under the DIUS name)
Yours faithfully,
Benjamin Jones

Dear Mr Jones,
Thank you for your email of 19 February where you requested information
about the department's NDPBs, budgets and the BERR and DIUS merger.
I can confirm that the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
(BIS) holds this information. Some of the information is exempt under
Section 21 of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), because the
information is accessible to you, as it is already in the public domain.
A list of BIS partners is available on the BIS website, at:
[1]http://www.bis.gov.uk/partners# You wished to know how many members of
staff were employed at each organisation. This information is not held by
the department. The individual bodies would be best placed to give you
this information. Contact details for all of the NDPBs are available on
their individual websites.
The annual budget for each NDPB is already available to you on the BIS
website, here:
[2]http://www.berr.gov.uk/aboutus/corporate...
The annual budget for 2009 - 2010 is not yet available, but is due to be
published on the website in due course. The information is therefore
exempt under section 22 of the FOIA. Section 22 on the Act is quantified
and requires a public interest test to be carried out. The Department is
not able to supply the requested information at this time as releasing
only some information without the benefit of full analysis has the
potential to be misleading or confusing to the public. Additionally, as
any such draft of the annual budget would be incomplete, the
administrative burden of managing and responding to the release of this
information would be considerable. When considering whether releasing
this information is in the public interest we have balanced the above
points against the benefits of releasing this information to the public
and have concluded that it is not in the public interest to do so.
Regarding your final question, all staff became BIS staff on the day the
new Department was created (5 June 2009) and all have BIS email
addresses. There are no functions remaining under the BERR or DIUS names.
The policy work of each former Department continues in the new Department
for Business, Innovation and Skills.
We have created a new BIS website (www.bis.gov.uk) and we are still
maintaining the former BERR and former DIUS websites (www.berr.gov.uk and
www.dius.gov.uk). These sites contain information about the policy areas
of the former Departments. Both of these sites are branded as BIS sites;
the BERR and DIUS identities are no longer used.
We plan to merge these sites into one overall BIS website in March 2010.
This page on our website explains where BIS information is held on the
three current sites:

Dear FOI Requests,
I am afraid this doesn't help, I am trying to create a "mind-map"
of the structure of BIS and the information provided does not tell
me what type of organisation they are and how they fit into the
overall structure of the BIS.
I need to know
Department Name - Type (Tribunal, executive, advisory etc)
The rest i will get once the annual report is out but i feel you
have not understood my enquiry fully.
Yours sincerely,
Benjamin Jones
